Halloween Pumpkin Decoration

{$150 Product Giveaway - Don't forget to enter!}

Now that my son is getting older he is getting very excited about any event that happens. In fact, he has been asking when Christmas is on a daily basis since July and has tried to help me bring in the Christmas decorations twice! In an effort to sidetrack his thinking, I am supporting his excitement for any event and so we will be decorating a little more for Halloween than we have in the past. This is our latest creation! We turned a homemade piñata into this below. It was pretty simple, fast and my son had a blast. It is all he has talked about this past week!

What You Need:

Directions:

Step 1: Follow instructions for making quick drying piñata that was previously posted. If you place your piñata in a well circulated area then it should dry pretty fast. Instead of needing to wait 2 or 3 days in between layers, you do all the layers at once and then have to wait 1.5 - 3 days. Ours took 2 days to completely dry.

Step 2: Decide on your coloring and let your little helpers paint away.

They really enjoyed this part.

All orange.

Step 3: Once the orange paint is dry, paint a fun face on it. My son really wanted a scary face, but I did not want anyone being too scared of it late at night, so we settled on a happy face.

 Step 4: You can choose to tie some string or ribbon on it by poking a couple of holes in the top and threading the string through them to make sure you have a secure hold. Then hang it from the ceiling to display your work. Or you could....

Step 5: ...Or you could cut the top off of the pumpkin using a pair of scissors. Note: Razor blade does not work, the piñata is much too tough!

Step 6: And stuff it full of candy! Set up a small table and through a dark blanket or material over it and you have a decorative "dish" to pass out your candy in on Halloween. Line with colored paper or tissue paper for some extra color. The table is also a great option for those who are not comfortable hanging the pumpkin from the ceiling.

Alternatives: Just for the fun of it before we painted it we used a little toilet paper (and tape) and turned the piñata into mummy!

The possibilities are endless...we are thinking about making a Frankenstein, too!

P.S. If you do not have enough candy to fill the pumpkin, use some newspaper to stuff the inside of the pumpkin and I was able to fit a small bowl inside that kept the candy from going all over the place.

Enjoy!

  8. I love it, my daughter would have so much fun making one. I think we'll just HAVE too!!! It's nice that they can be messy and just go at it with the paint and not have to make a specific design. Such a good idea to make it a treat bowl. Thanks for sharing with us at A Crafty Soiree! Please join us next time too!
